I A/B Tested My Dating Profile With and Without Gym Pics (The Results Were Wild)
I'm an engineer. I optimize things. So when my dating life was going nowhere, I did what any reasonable person would do: I ran an A/B test on my Hinge profile.
The experiment:
- Version A (2 weeks): Normal pics. Me at a wedding, me with my dog, me cooking, me at a concert. Zero gym content.
- Version B (2 weeks): Same bio, same prompts, but swapped two photos for tasteful gym pics. One mid-workout in a tank top, one post-run looking sweaty but happy.
Same swiping behavior both rounds. Same times of day. Controlled as much as I could.
The results:
Version A: 23 matches, 14 conversations, 2 dates Version B: 41 matches, 9 conversations, 1 date
READ THAT AGAIN.
The gym pics almost DOUBLED my matches but CUT my meaningful conversations in half. More people swiped right but fewer people actually wanted to talk to me.
My theory: Gym pics attract attention but they also attract a specific TYPE of attention. A lot of the Version B matches opened with stuff like "nice arms" or just the flexed bicep emoji. Which, flattering, but not exactly the foundation for stimulating conversation.
The Version A matches? Those people were responding to ME. My dog. My cooking. My terrible wedding dance moves. They had things to ask about.
What I learned:
- Gym pics are attention-grabbers, not conversation-starters
- One subtle fitness pic is plenty — you don't need the full gun show
- Your profile should show your life, not your lifts
- The match that became an actual relationship? Version A. She liked the picture of me burning pasta.
I'm not saying hide that you're fit. There's actual science behind fitness and attraction — it matters. But leading with it filters for the wrong things.
If you're specifically looking for someone who values fitness as much as you do, honestly consider apps designed for that. DateFit literally matches people based on fitness interests, so you don't have to play the "do I include gym pics" game — everyone there already gets it.
My optimized profile now: dog pic first, cooking pic second, ONE candid gym pic third (not shirtless, just me looking happy after a run), concert pic last. Conversion rate is way up. The engineer in me is satisfied.
Has anyone else experimented with their dating profile? Tell me your findings. I love data.
